Home Decor

Hello everyone,

I'm still playing catch up with everything but I wanted to pop in to say hello and share a little of what I've been up to. When I took art at school, my painting and drawing was so poor that the Art Teacher used to ask me to give out brushes or change the water pots for other the pupils, and he eventually suggested that I take needlework instead! As a result, my lack of ability stopped me trying anything artistic and I have always lacked confidence in this direction. When my children were older, I started scrapbooking and loved creating layouts that used the enormous pile of photographs I had accumulated, along with beautiful papers and embellishments. A while later I discovered stamping and started creating cards so I could send handmade greetings to the people I love. Then I started blogging and sharing my creations with all you lovely crafters, and the encouragement I have received has made me realise that art isn't only about drawing and painting. However, when it comes to wall art, I still have a voice in my head that says I cannot do it, and shouldn't even try. When we finished painting the bedroom recently, the walls were looking bare and I was about to go out and look for some new pictures, when I had the thought that this was a chance to have a go because nobody else would get to see them if I didn't want them to. I had seen an idea on Pinterest that I really liked that involved hanging frames from a window pole and I was inspired to try it. Of course I still can't draw or paint so I used my stamps, inks and die cuts, along with a few cheap frames from Ikea to produce my pictures, and this is what I came up with:-

I used Papertrey Ink dies and stamps, a few gems and a little heart.

Papertrey Ink again, plus a Memory Box tulip die.

This one is the same as the first but with the butterflies flying off the opposite way.

And this is how they look on the pole, decorated with a few bows.

I was really pleased with the result which hangs over the bed, and the success gave me the strength to try my hand at word art on canvas for another wall. I used my Cameo to cut the words in vinyl, stuck them to the canvas, painted over it and when it was dry I removed the vinyl

to reveal a saying that I can see every morning when I wake up to remind me that happiness is a decision I can make. So there you have it.  Me doing wall art - who would have thunk it!!!

I would like to enter these into the Path of Positivity Challenge
and the Word Art Wednesday Challenge which is Anything Goes.

Thanks for looking in and I hope to get round to some of the blogs I am missing this week.

Hugs

I really dislike when children are told that they aren't good enough at something. Like with you, it is something that can continue to affect you throughout life. While it is equally important not to give someone false hope, it is just as important to not take it away completely. I am so glad that you had the strength to move past that incident and continue to try your hand at creating. These framed pieces are absolutely lovely. True strength lies in being courageous, which you most certainly were, and it definitely paid off.

May you always be able to call upon strength when you need it!

Hi Carol, thank you for the lovely comment on miy blog. I hopped over to pay you a visit too. I've read your words about the teacher and thought... what a pity he didn't try to encourage you instead of giving up on you. It affected you, that's clear. I am a teacher too and think that's so unkind. I am happy you have found ways to express your creativity! You can be very proud of these lovely home decorations and of the other things you create!

These are really wonderful. I never would have guessed that you do not think of yourself as artistic. I am always impressed with your artistic talent whenever I read your blog. I love how these turned out, and how great for you that every time you enter the room you will be reminded of the time you tried and succeeded in making something unique and beautiful.

Hi, Carol! What a delightfully sweet home decor item! Love the soft color and beautiful bows. Carol, isn't it a shame that so few words can wield great power as to affect a life for the rest of their existence. It is so humbling to know we may bash a person's fragile life. I appreciate what you say because I had a similar experience, only with my family, not my teachers. Thank goodness for my teachers to counteract what I heard at home. I woud never have considered making something so beautiful as your home decor item, but now you have encouraged me. So beautiful, and a wonderful gift item, too! I have become your newest follower. hugs, de

That is stunning! Love how you have created your own wall art and chose not to hear the little voice! It's really sad that what we get told in our childhood affects so much our confidence!!! Way to go!

These are BEAUTIFUL!! This must be old school teaching because no teacher I know would quash creativity like that. Everyone can paint or draw-maybe not in a realistic style but who says if something is exaggerated that is bad? It is all up to the viewer and sometimes it makes us think. It makes me sad that some teacher would do that to you. Your creations are a piece of art and you ARE and ARTIST!!!
